With the game tied at 68, and the game clock expiring, Western Carolina freshman guard Trey Sumler was fouled on a last second shot. Sumler sank the first free throw and intentionally missed the second, collecting his own rebound and securing the 69-68 victory for the Catamounts in the Ramsey Center.
Sumler finished with 15 points and 8 assists, while Catamount senior guard Mike Williams led all scorers with 22 points.
WCU improved to 12-13 overall, with an 8-5 record in the Southern Conference, while the loss placed Chattanooga, leader of the conference North Division, at 14-12 overall and 10-4 in the SOCON.
The Catamounts held a 14-point lead midway through the second half, but the Mocs were able to fight back into the game and tie the score at 68 in the final seconds.
