Western Carolina students and alumni gathered Saturday, Sept. 22, for some food, football and fun, better known as tailgating.
The WCU catamounts battled the Samford bulldogs during family weekend at 3:30 p.m. at E.J. Whitmire stadium in Cullowhee NC. Tailgating for the event started at noon.
“With our new Chancellor David Belcher allowing us to tailgate 3 ½ hours before the games this year everyone is really excited,” said Justin Brittain a senior majoring in Health and Physical Education. “Chancellor Belcher shows so much support for WCU which really gets the crowd involved.”
All of the tailgating spots in the football lot were occupied during tailgating hours. “Tailgating has always been my favorite thing about Western,” said Gary Rocket an alumni who has been tailgating since 1963. “This year something seems different. All of the families out here and the new chancellor driving around on his WCU golf cart really get the people going! I like his involvement!”
Alumni or current student all seem to agree that the new chancellor brings new fun to WCU tailgating.
The catamounts lost the game 25-21 to the bulldogs. The next home game will be for the homecoming, Oct. 6 at 3:30 p.m. when the catamounts will battle the Georgia Southern Eagles. Tailgating will begin at noon.
