Cathy Arrington, small marketing company owner, came to speak to a professional development class at Western Carolina University on Tuesday April 1, 2014.

Arrington graduated from Western Carolina University with a marketing degree in 1997. She is the owner of Insight Marketing Company in Waynesville, NC that provides marketing and strategic planning services. She is also on the board of the Western Carolina University center for Entrepreneurship.

Arrington has worked for two hospitals holding titles such as marketing director, public relation director, and strategic planner. She spoke about how her job in public relations is almost like damage control.

“Call me before you speak to the media,” said Arrington about managing crisis from the hospitals in her public relation career.

Arrington talked to students about an employer’s point of view and what she is looking for in the hiring process.  She said knowledge in social media is a must. The change in communication made it important for people to have experience with Facebook, Twitter, and even Instagram.
