The University of North Carolina Board of Governors will hold its September meeting on the Western Carolina University campus in conjunction with the 125th anniversary of the founding of the institution that became WCU.
Western Carolina Chancellor David O. Belcher announced the pending visit of the Board of Governors and staff members from UNC General Administration as part of his annual Opening Assembly address to kick off the fall semester.
The board is the policy-making body for the multi-campus UNC system, and its committee meetings and regular board meetings are open to the public.
“This is a rare opportunity, which will bring the entire Board of Governors, the senior leadership of General Administration, the chancellors and senior staff from all of the other 16 campuses, and a number of legislators to the Western Carolina campus,” Belcher said.
The visit, spanning Sept. 10-12, will include time for campus tours by members of the board Wednesday, Sept. 10; board committee meetings throughout the day Thursday, Sept. 11; and the formal board meeting Friday, Sept. 12.
Additional information, including the formal meeting schedule, will be made available by UNC General Administration the week prior to the meeting.
Update:An email from Chancellor Belcher to faculty on August 29 stated,
“The members of the Board of Governors, President Tom Ross and his senior staff, almost all of the other UNC system chancellors and many of their senior staff, elected officials and the media will be on campus during this time period. Some will begin arriving as early as Tuesday, September 9, with a campus tour for new board members and staff scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. Unless a committee or the board as a whole goes into closed session, the meetings are open to the public, and I strongly encourage you to attend. The meeting agenda will not be available until next week, but we will send it out once we receive it.
Be forewarned that parking will be at a premium during these days, and many spaces will be reserved for our guests. Be patient, be proud, and wear purple! Greet Board of Governors members whom you encounter with courtesy and smiles, and help them find their way across campus if they appear lost.
We have an incredible university, one that through its faculty, staff, and students, is doing amazing things. This is an opportunity for us to share that story.”
