Sylva’s Mountain Mediation Services is hosting a Bridges to Peace Family Fun Day at the Jackson County Recreation Center in Cullowhee this Saturday, April 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This carnival-style family fun day is a fundraiser to support upcoming programs to spread awareness and prevention for bullying in schools. During the day, there will be many activities, games and inflatables. There will also be a raffle. The first drawn will win a Myrtle Beach vacation getaway.
Mountain Mediation Services is a local nonprofit organization with a mission “to promote resolution of conflicts in the seven western counties of North Carolina by educating the community … as an alternative to court.”
Mackensie Jimison with WCU’s Center for Service Learning is coordinating the WCU student volunteers for the event and will be helping out with parking, snow cone machines and inflatables.
“The students came up with an educational activity for the kids that involves a maze. Basically, at the beginning of the maze, they’ll ask the kids a question regarding how they would react in a situation where bullying is involved. Once they answer, they’ll have to choose which direction to go and that will be repeated throughout the maze,” Jimison said.
The day will be filled will games and prizes, but will also include activities and information about how to handle and prevent bullying. The suggested entry donation for the event is $1 per person.
