For the first time in 10 years, the WCU women’s soccer team is headed to the final four round of the Southern Conference tournament.
The Cats will travel to face Furman in Birmingham, Alabama on Friday, November 3 after a 1-0 victory over VMI on Sunday Oct. 29 with a goal by Emily Threatt.
“It was like a rush, we haven’t gotten this far in almost 10 years and it feels so amazing to be able to be a part of such a huge accomplishment,” said senior, Anna Mellis.
Mellis had the game winning goal against ETSU to earn the No. 4 seed in the tournament and host the first round tournament game in Cullowhee.
Key component to the game on Sunday was goalkeeper, Jacqui Gnassi. She had a total of nine saves including one that she laid on top of before rolling to the net.
The last time the Cats met Furman in the semi-finals, WCU pulled out a 1-0 victory. The team would like to bring home another SoCon championship since their last win in 2008.
“It feels amazing to be a part of this but it’s not enough. We want to make it all the way. We want to bring home the rings,” said junior, Eynde Frazier.
If you are unable to travel to Birmingham this weekend to cheer on the Cats, you can watch live on the SoCon Digital Network.
