Alternative spring break for WCU students at the Outer Banks

WCU students have the opportunity for an alternative Spring Break… helping communities in need instead of catching waves.

The Center of Service Learning is sending students to work with several partners in Kitty Hawk, a community on the shore of North Carolina, from March 3 to 10.

During the week WCU students will work with the Lost Colony Historical Society and help get their facilities ready for the summer. They will work a few days with the NC Coastal Reserve on some trails that need some maintenance and do some beach clean ups. Finally, they will work with the local SPCA tending to their facility as well helping with the animals at the shelter.

Assistant Director for the Center for Service Learning, Jennifer Cooper, hopes that the trip will provide opportunities for the students to develop a love for helping communities.

“You know, they might actually get new practical skills so like for the trail work project you know working with some tools that they hadn’t gotten to work with in the past for instance…But I guess first and foremost that they all enjoy their volunteering, get some new experiences there and have a great time,” said Cooper.

The cost for the trip is $175 which will cover housing, transportation, and food.
