WCU sorority fundraising for Autism Speaks

WCU Alpha Xi Delta starts its fundraising season for Autism.

The sisters of WCU Alpha Xi Delta are holding “The Amaxing Challenge” to raise money and awareness for Autism Speaks throughout the week of Sept. 17 to 21.

The “Amaxing Challenge” is the signature fundraiser of Alpha Xi Delta and is set up every fall semester to raise awareness, understanding, and acceptance of autism. All proceeds from the events will benefit Autism Speaks, the official philanthropy of the sorority. Since partnering with Autism Speaks in 2009, all Alpha Xi Delta chapters have collectively raised over $8 million for the organization.

The fundraiser will kick off with an ongoing penny wars challenge and sticker sale on the UC lawn. On Friday, the fundraiser will wrap up with the “Xi Man” challenge, a notoriously competitive talent show for competing fraternities in the UC theater from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Member of WCU’s Sigma Alpha Epsilon and a competitor in “Xi Man,” Khadim Jones plans to lead his fraternity to victory by “studying hard on the history of Alpha Xi Delta” and “dancing better than everyone else out there.”

“We’re expecting a great turnout at our events this year, we just hope the weather does not hold up our plans,” Heather Brady, the vice president of finance of Alpha Xi Delta, said.

The biggest competitors in “The Amaxing Challenge” are most likely to be fraternities because the winning fraternity receives an all-expense paid social with Alpha Xi Delta this semester.
