Hazing prevention week at Western Carolina University

The organizations that are represented won Greek Week in the spring of 2017.

After a week of rushing and pledging to join the Greek community at WCU, comes a week that focuses on preventing hazing.

WCU’s Greek Student Engagement & Development pledged zero tolerance for hazing and sexual misconduct, and speaker, Dr. Lori Hart, is plans to educate student leaders on how to accomplish that.

The event will be at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24 in the University Center.

WCU’s Greek community says it does not face struggles with hazing, but there were previous incidents of hazing with organizations such as PIKE, which caused the WCU Greek community to become stricter during the pledging process. WCU’s Greek community consist of five College Panhellenic Council sororities, nine Interfraternity Council fraternities, and six National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. fraternities and sororities.

“Dr. Lori Hart is an avid participant in the fraternity/sorority community. [She] visits close to 70 campuses a year, bringing messages about relationships, alcohol education, and fraternity and sorority life,” Nancy Yang, a member of the College Panhellenic Council, said.

WCU’s Greek office, professional and undergraduate staff, are excited for Hart’s visit and opportunity to learn how to hold themselves accountable for possible hazing and alcohol abuse.

While this event is directed towards the greek community, all students and organizations are encouraged to come.
