(the story has been corrected we had mistake in the end of the early voting period and the election day)
Early voting for the 2018 mid-term election starts on Oct. 17 and residents of Cullowhee and local area will have the voting place on campus open for them.
Students living on and off campus will have a chance to cast their vote in the University Center (UC) Multipurpose room.
Early voting is through Nov. 3. Election day is on Nov. 6 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
To cast the vote, you need to be registered in Jackson County. Voter registration drives sponsored by the Student Democracy Coalition are every Thursday on the UC lawn and end Oct. 4.
Students will also be able to register and vote on the same day during early voting. Student on campus just need to know the building they live in and their CAT CARD. Off Campus Students need to bring your ID and a utility bill demonstrating their address.
According to a special report on student voting habits from the WCU Center for Service Learning, in 2016, the number of registered students decreased by 9 percent from the 2012 presidential election. However, in the same report, registered WCU students outvoted the North Carolina population by 1.5 percent.
“While this election may not be as attractive as the 2016 Presidential Election, the candidates and referendums we will be voting on have a direct impact on our lives not only as students at WCU, but as residents of Jackson County, residents of North Carolina, and citizens of the United States,” says Fiona Buchanan, head of the Student Democracy Coalition.
During the voting period, the UC will have a no campaign zone. This means that there will be no campaigning within 25-feet of the UC and no partisan posters or pamphlets will be displayed.
Students not registered in Jackson County can place an absentee ballot for the county they are registered in. More information about absentee ballots can be found here.
