Over 6,000 people rocked the Knoxville Civic Coliseum on Feb. 23 when Jacksonville, Florida rock band, Shinedown, returned to the hometown of lead singer Brent Smith.

Shinedown currently consists of Brent Smith on lead vocals, Zach Myers on lead guitar, Eric Bass on bass, and Barry Kerch on drums. They are best known for their 2008 album “The Sound of Madness,” which generated six singles, “Devour,” “Second Chance,” “Sound of Madness,” “If You Only Knew,” “The Crow & the Butterfly” and “Diamond Eyes (Boom-Lay Boom-Lay Boom).”

Now they are touring off their 2018 album “Attention Attention” with two No. 1 singles on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart, “Devil” and “Get Up.” Joining them on the road for their world tour are Papa Roach and Asking Alexandria, known for songs such as “Last Resort” and “Not the American Average.” Asking Alexandria kicked off the show at 7 p.m. with a nine-song set followed by Papa Roach with a 14-song set.

Around 9:20 p.m., a white curtain dropped with pyro going off to Shinedown performing “Devil.” The special effects were brilliant and featured pyrotechnics, flames, lasers, and atmospherics.

“Even though I had never been to a rock concert before, I did not expect the energy that I experienced at the concert. It was energizing! My favorite part was when they performed “Second Chance,” telling the audience to wave their flashlights in the air as a resemblance of “Halley’s Comet.” “I loved how appreciative and enthusiastic Shinedown was — seeing them enjoy performing for us made the experience twice as good,” said attendee Aaron Speyer.

For their stage show, they used Pyrotek, which won the Top Dog Award for Pyro/Special Effects Company of the Year from the 2019 Tour Link Pro Conference for their work with multiple artists.

The variety of the songs on the setlist was good with two songs from their debut album “Leave a Whisper,” three from “The Sound of Madness,” five from “Amaryllis,” three from “Threat to Survival,” five from “Attention Attention,” but none were performed from the 2005 album “Us and Them.” The complete setlist is below:

  1. “Devil”
  2. “Diamond Eyes (Boom-Lay Boom-Lay Boom)”
  3. “Enemies”
  4. “Monsters”
  5. “Black Soul”
  6. “I’ll Follow You”
  7. “Unity”
  8. “Get Up”
  9. “Bully”
  10. “Amaryllis”
  11. “Misfits”
  12. “How Did You Love”
  13. “Second Chance”
  14. “45”
  15. “Simple Man”
  16. “Cut the Cord”
  17. “Sound of Madness”
  18. “Brilliant”

The overall concert experience was above satisfactory including simple things such as lines, security and ease of access in and out of the venue, to crucial elements of a concert like the sound quality and setlist. It was a great show and I would see them again if I was given the opportunity. Their setlist is always changing so you are almost guaranteed to not see the same show twice.
