Over its 130 years as an institution, Western Carolina University has grown from a one-room school building with just under 20 students to a university with over 11,000 students from not only North Carolina, but around the world. As the university continues to grow and develop, we’ve documented some of its historic milestones as well as some of its hurdles. Though our timeline ends 130 years later in 2019, our university’s history and growth will continue for years to come.
During the Spring 2019 semester, WCJ reporters Natalie Ballard, Hallie West, Allyson Wainright, Mary McKay, Ashley Velasquez, Patrick Clemons, Tyler Davis and Chandler Keller worked on stories looking at the growth of WCU, especially with the N.C. promise now in place. Below are the stories produced as part of the project. Editor of the project was Chelsea Komer.
- As WCU grows, so does sustainability efforts.
- Residential Living accommodating for over 4,000 students.
- Scott and Walker residence halls to go offline.
- A new dorm is opening in Fall 2019.
- Parking and Transportation Operations at WCU.
