Warning: Brief Expletive Language
Welcome to the Picture Show, where you’ll hear two unprofessional, untrained, completely unlicensed movie lovers give opinions nobody asked for on movies they like (and sometimes on ones that they don’t).
In today’s episode, Western Carolina students Nicole Ellison and Hannah Fink discuss the recent award shows, specifically the Oscars, Golden Globes, and the Independent Spirit Awards.
The two discuss the good, the bad, the ugly, and the most important question of all: does any of it even matter anymore?
There are some pleasantly surprising winners that are talked about, such as Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, which won an Oscar in four categories and became the first non-English language film to win the best picture award.
They also discuss how the Independent Spirit Awards nominate different movies than their mainstream counterparts, and that the average Oscars and Golden Globe Awards do not give recognition to more Indie films such as The Farewell and Booksmart.
They even talk about past winners, such as 2019 Oscar winner Greenbook compared to 2018 Oscar winner Moonlight, and how different the winning films are.
Finally, they give their opinions on the award show season in general. According to Variety, this was the least viewed year for the Oscars, bringing us to ask: do people care anymore?
