During the COVID-19 crisis a lot of students working on or near campus lost their jobs. Leading to lower or no income for necessary expenses like rent, food and hygiene needs.
The university is offering a student relief fund for students who need to pay for these expenses.
Another resource including food, hygiene needs, and housing being offered to students during this pandemic is HOMEBASE. However, they are operating on an on-call basis.
HOMEBASE, an outreach of Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina, provides short-term emergency housing. They have four multi-stall restrooms with showers and two guest rooms.
They additionally have two banquet rooms and a kitchen that they use to host events to combat student hunger. Due to the quarantine all events have been cancelled until further notice.
“We are offering all our services at this time just on an as needed basis. People can contact us at anytime and still get housing, food, toiletries or use the computer lab,” said Dr. Jim Dean, director of HOMEBASE. “Both mine and Melanie’s phone numbers are posted on the front door and the Facebook page.”
HOMEBASE is still accepting food and toiletry donations but are no longer accepting clothes at the moment.
Melanie Vick, who has been the building manager and event coordinator for HOMEBASE for eight months, speaks on some of the additional resources HOMEBASE has to offer.
