WCU baseball looks to carry hot streak into upcoming series

The WCU Baseball team is currently on 6 game win streak that has seen them outscore their opponents by a wide margin of 67-25. After having their last few games cancelled and rescheduled, the Catamounts look to refocus on the task at hand in their March 26-27 series against The Citadel.

The Catamounts have accumulated a record consisting of 11 wins and 4 losses which is the best record the Catamounts have had through their first 15 games in over 6 years. Head Coach, Robert Moranda believes the baseball program as a whole deserves credit for this early season success.

“We have more good players (than in the past)… But, I think it’s accredit to the players and the work that they did over COVID. And I also think it’s accredit to our new assistant coach, I think Coach Cox has done a really good job with our hitters and their mentality,” Moranda explained over the phone.

Senior team member and former team captain Will Prater doubled down on Moranda’s comments on what he believes has caused the Catamounts offensive surge.

“I think it really comes with how we worked in the fall and preparation for the season. We also saw the best pitching in the Southern Conference in my opinion facing our guys every weekend when we scrimmage each other. That, as well as being disciplined at the plate. We draw a lot of walks and we lead the whole country in hit by pitches as an offense.” Prater said

Prater also commented on how his role on the team is different this year compared to last year which he said is because “we are very and deep in our roster“, similarly to Moranda’s comments.

From the 2018 season to the 2021 season, the Catamounts have the highest run differential through their first 15 games by a wide margin seeing them outscore their opponents by 70 runs through the first 15 games.

The Catamounts look for a clean sweep as they open a 3 game series with a double header against The Citadel on March, 26 at 2 p.m.
