WCU women’s volleyball looks to make a splash, as the 2021 Southern Conference Volleyball Tournament begins on Friday, April 2 in Birmingham, Alabama.

The Cats finished third in the SoCon standings and concluded the regular season on fire. The catamounts finished their conference schedule winning 10 of their final 12 matches, including 6 straight.

Merry Gebel, Outside Hitter and 1st team All-SoCon selection, attributes the teams recent success to their team chemistry. “We have really started to gel as a team,” said Gebel, “normally we have a couple tournaments to play in before the regular season starts, but this year, because of COVID-19, we had to go straight into conference play.”

After a tough 1-5 start to the season, with losses to Clemson, the Citadel, and regular season champion Samford, the Cats corrected course and clawed their way into the SoCon Tournament.

Haley Multerer, Right-side Hitter for the Cats, says her coaches have been harping on playing their style heading into the conference tournament. “When we focus on playing our game, in our speed and style, we play our best,” said Multerer in an email interview. “We are going to go out and play as Western Carolina University volleyball and embody everything that means. We will be strong, relentless, fast, smart, and passionate,” Multerer added.

The Catamounts will take on the Mercer Bears at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN+. The Cats swept the Bears in their two regular season matchups this season.
