WCU roaring with pride for the homecoming

Western Carolina University Homecoming is back in full swing.

The week of fun begins Oct. 4 at 8 a.m. and goes to Oct. 10. The purple and gold community will enjoy the traditional carnival, homecoming parade in Sylva and the football game. Students can also make their own WCU souvenirs, go to a career fair, hike, or do yoga with alumni.

The Homecoming Carnival is one of the many events that Last Minute Productions puts together. This year the carnival is two days, on Oct. 5 and 6 but you can only attend one of these days.
“While we hope that more students can participate, we wanted to give a better chance for students to enjoy the activities. Students can only attend one day and that is to help reduce long lines,” the Assistant Director of Department of Campus Activities, Diane Swenson said.

Freshmen, Zelda Stracener is excited for festivities. She is planning on attending with friends and compare WCU homecoming to a high school homecoming. She added that she expects that “masks will be required due to COVID-19 protocols.”

Students will have to pick up the free entry wristbands and free food vouchers for the Carnival from the UC Service Desk prior to one of the two days they wish to attend.

Due to COVID-19, last years homecoming festivities were canceled.

“It is going to be a great turn out just because we did not get to have a homecoming last year. I also think that people who did not experience it last year will get to this year and feel the excitement,” senior student, Nick Lyons said.
