Snow day for the Catamounts; Tuesday classes canceled

Every dog has its day and every student gets their snow day. After two years without good snowfall during the school year, Western Carolina students were thrilled to spend a day in a winter wonderland.

The storm blew through Cullowhee early on Sunday morning with temperatures dipping as low as 24 degrees. The snow fell until late Sunday night. There is a 15% chance of slight precipitation until the end of Monday, according to The Weather Channel.

“My roommate Mani woke me up at 7:30 yelling because she was so happy about the snow,” said 19 year old track runner Makayla Turner. “We got dressed and met with some more friends on the track team to go have a snowball fight.”

On campus, students were sledding down the hill in front of Bronson Honors College residence hall, Blue Ridge on whatever they could find. Be it scraps of cardboard, storage bin lids, to even kayaks and the detached hood of a car.

WCU students also made several snowmen, ranging from tiny, to several feet tall. They adorned them with sticks, fruit, clothing, and in one case, a large traffic cone.

No one can resist making a snowman, especially Catamounts. Western students built this snowman right outside of Courtyard dining, and placed a chair in front of it so students could take pictures with the gigantic creation. Photo by Madelyn Ricket.

The Student Government Association (SGA) challenged Turning Point USA (TPUSA) to a snowball fight at 1 p.m., on their Instagram story. TPUSA responded to the challenge, and later posted on their story about how they appreciated the “fun little distraction”.

Western students made the most of the winter storm and will continue to do so through Tuesday. WCU recently made the announcement that all in-person classes in Cullowhee and Biltmore will be suspended on Tuesday, Jan. 18.
