The Department of Campus Recreation and Base Camp Cullowhee will be hosting their annual bouldering competition Feb. 7-10 from 4-8 p.m. daily at the Campus Recreation Center climbing wall.

Casey Fenton, Interim Assistant Director of Outdoor Programs, describes bouldering as one of the most basic forms of climbing. “You’re not attached to a rope. It happens very close to the ground,” said Fenton in an interview, “…the moves are just harder by the nature of like, you’re only climbing five or 10 feet off the ground…You can only pack so much in that distance.”

The competition, exclusively available to WCU students, will be based on a flash style of scoring. Previously this event was available to the public and was a sanctioned USA Climbing event.

Flash style competition scoring is based on the number of attempts it takes to complete the course. You are allotted five attempts to complete the course and each failure is a deduction of 10 points.

The top three finishers in the two divisions, men’s and women’s, will be announced via social media on Friday, Feb. 11.

The competition requires a $10 entry fee and application that must be completed by Thursday, Feb., 10. which can be found on the Base Camp Cullowhee Website.
