‘Romeo and Juliet’ a new twist on an old tragedy

The School of Stage and Screen’s is opening the season with a love treat – LGBTQ friendly production of Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet.’

The opening performance is tonight, Feb. 17, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the University auditorium. The three following productions will be Friday, Feb. 18, and Saturday, Feb. 19, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. as well as Sunday, Feb 20, from 3-5 p.m.

Romeo and Juliet is a classic Shakespearean tragedy surrounding the young love between Romeo and Juliet with the age-old family vendetta that forbids them from being with one another.

Director Colin Wasmund, WCU professor at the Stage and Screen school, said that the school chose to go with this production because it is a familiar story and it is low in production costs.
The cost might be not big but the crew worked hoard to make this He is working with two co-directors to make this retelling of the ‘Romeo and Juliet’ entertaining and memorable.

“I don’t want to give too much away but there are definitely some changes in characters that are different from what you would think that ‘Romeo and Juliet’ would have, which makes it a lot more interesting,” said co-director Zoe Postlewait.

Co-director Jacob Williams is excited to see how the audience sees the show adding that “Colin put a lot of focus on making this show a piece of entertainment rather than simply a Shakespeare production.”

Tickets went on sale Jan. 18, but you can still buy tickets from the box office at the university auditorium. The prices range from $20 general admission; $15 for faculty, staff, and seniors; and student tickets are $10.

With a strong cast and crew and the changes to the age-old tale, this performance is shaping up to be a great one.
