Around 1,800 pounds of trash picked up at Tuck River Cleanup

Base Camp Cullowhee had the 27th annual Tuck River Cleanup. Volunteers rafted down the river and stopped along the way to pick up trash along the side.

Once they reached the end of the river, staff would take the bags of trash and use a scale to see how much the trash weighed. Around 1,800 pounds of trash was collected. The trash collected was taken by GDS Republic Services.

206 participants were involved in the cleanup, and every participant had to sign a waiver before going on the rafts. There was also an option to walk the river instead of rafting.

Kianna Agee, a senior at Western Carolina says this is not her first time being part of the cleanup, but it is her first time rafting.

“We pretty much just stopped on the side of the banks, and picked up a bunch of trash in the beginning and towards the end,” Agee said.

The river cleanup started at Dillsboro River Company and went down all the way to a raft pick up near Uncle Bill’s Flea Market. The ride along the river took about three hours for participants.

Khaliq Serrano, a senior at WCU, it was his first time being part of the cleanup, and he would do it again.

“It’s a really good opportunity to spend time with people and connect with them, while serving a good purpose for the community,” Serrano said.
