Did you know Sylva has its very own glass blowing studio?

The glass blowing studio is located at the Jackson County Green Energy Park and pre-COVID it was a popular place. People could rent the studio and work for a few hours and make their own art or attend classes. At the moment the studio is closed because of construction in the area but that is not an obstacle for the Sylva native and your friendly glass- blowing artist, Emily Powell.

Most days you can find Powell in the City Lights Cafe, preparing and serving customers their food.

Powell learned glass blowing during her studies at UNC Asheville. She loved the creation process so much that she still does it eight years later, and even adorning her body with a tattoo of one of the glass blowing tools.

In an interview, Powell said she loves the challenge glass blowing gives her, as well as the opportunity to add beauty to the world.

Her favorite things to make are flower vases. Powell’s current project is creating a series of jewel-toned vases that will be later sandblasted with designs.

Watch the video bellow as Powell takes us step by step on creating a wine glass.
