In between classes, students came and wrote words of encouragement to survivors of sexual assault in a letter. The letters will be donated to the Center for Domestic Peace.
WCU Students Against Sexual Assault (SASA) club held the event on the front lawn of the UC on Tuesday, Sept. 27 noon until 2 p.m.
“It gives people the opportunity to express what they’ve been thinking themselves, or what they’ve been wanting to say to someone else, or even just helping out a stranger that might need support,” said Berkley Joyner, a director of SASA.
SASA plans to continue the event in the years to come. According to Rayna Teague, another director of SASA, it’s kind of a two-for-one: students write things they may also need to hear while empowering others.
SASA’s mission is to spread awareness, provide resources, increase advocacy and influence change in policies. There will be more upcoming events to get students attention and to encourage victims to feel welcome as they have a support system on campus.
“We want to be support for survivors not just on campus but have the resources to go out and support others,” said Joyner.
