Hispanic Heritage Month is from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. Many student organizations participated in celebrations and events to honor LatinX students and faculty.
“First observed in 1968 and later expanded and formalized in 1988, the month-long celebration honors the positive influence and contributions of Hispanic, Latinequis and Latine individuals in the United States over many generations,” Ricardo Nazario-Colón, Chief Diversity Officer of the Equal Opportunity and Diversity Programs, said through email.
Different organizations held events like tabling, study sessions, information sessions, and a large Hispanic Heritage Month cookout held by SGA with attendees from multiple organizations on campus.
Hispanic Heritage Month is meant to bring together Hispanic and LatinX students while informing about Hispanic cultures and what they mean to students. Through numerous events, students were able to share their experiences and learn about others.
“To me, as an Afro-Latina, first generation American, and Vice President of the LatinX Appreciation Student Organization on campus, this month is an opportunity to show our love and support for the Hispanic community and those within it,” said Eliana Cruz from SGA and Vice President of LASO.
In her email Cruz lists off different resources such as LASO, Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad, also known as Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc., Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and Mujeres Con un Propósito (MCP) which means women with a purpose.
“Spreading awareness of Hispanic heritage and holding events follows a long heritage that has been a companion of the higher education experience since its beginnings,” said Nazario-Colón.
The Carolinian & WCJ hopes all LatinX community members were able to enjoy Hispanic Heritage Month!
