The power of cinema to keep community

In a divisive time, with heated political and social climates, anything that creates unity is valuable. Theaters could play a great role in this than we realize.

Greg Israel, the owner of Sylva’s “Catamount Cinemas” and “Smoky Mountain Cinemas” in Waynesville, says “Theaters create social opportunities and unify people in many ways.”

Israel, among many others, sees theaters as a place for social experiences, rather than simply viewing a movie. One way he connects this is through his experience during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“People were nervous to leave their homes, understandably. When our theater in Waynesville closed, people missed it, which reveals a uniqueness about theaters. We responded by creating a drive-in theater, which gave the community a safe opportunity to get that familiar experience. There was an incredible response, and everyone had an incredible time! While streaming is great, it doesn’t always provide the social aspect a theater does,” Israel said.

When the old Quinn Theater owner announced they were closing in April 2022, there was an outpour of comments on social media from the community. A few months later, Israel and his partner David Parlier, owner of Ruby Cinemas on the south side of Franklin, announced that Sylva’s beloved theater would return.

Since the purchase in July, the new owners made some changes like self-serve drinks, popcorn butter, and candy with some exciting works are in process. But they still honor its long history as a staple in the community.

“Any community benefits from a theater. It’s great for the economy and gives people something to do. Sure, I could use Blu-ray at home, but there’s something special about being around so many people and getting to witness different reactions,” said WCU alum, Ryan Messer, after getting out of one of the four theaters.

Theaters are like buffets. There is a little something for everyone. Whether people come to make memories with friends, critique a movie, explore new genres, or anything else; there is almost always something of value inside.
