Catamounts women’s soccer to take on Samford in SoCon opener

The Western Carolina women’s soccer team will play Samford in their first Southern Conference game this season on Sept. 21 in Birmingham, Alabama.

The Catamounts will enter their SoCon opener with a 3-2-3 record after recording a 4-0 win against Presbyterian on September 14. The Presbyterian Blue Hoses currently have a 1-6-1 record with a 0-3 loss against Davidson on Sept. 10.

Samford boasts a 4-2-3 record following a 0-5 loss against Harvard University on Sept. 14. The Bulldogs open their Conference campaign as defending SoCon Champions, having beaten UNC Greensboro on penalties in last year’s tournament final.

The Catamounts and Bulldogs have met 17 times, with Samford leading with 14 wins and WCU winning only two games. In their last encounter, at the end of the 2022 season, the Bulldogs secured a 1-0 win.

Midfielder for the Catamounts, Ava Robitaille, is happy with the team’s start to the season.

“We are really young, we have a lot of freshman and sophomores that play a lot, but I think we have started off really good,” Robitaille said.
The Catamounts currently have seven freshman and six sophomores on their roster.

Robitaille, who made the Southern Conference all-freshman team in 2022, is also excited to play the reigning SoCon champions first up.
The Catamounts will go into the game with a positive mindset and the belief that they will win.

The game starts at 7 p.m. at Shauna Yelton Field in Birmingham.
