For the small cost of $15, you can get your groove on in a physically productive and silently unique way.
There will be a silent disco on Saturday, Sept. 14 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. at the Sylva Pinnacle Relief CBD Wellness Lounge across from Bridge Park in Sylva.
Sylva resident Emma Law, host of the event, emphasizes the importance of using dance for physical health and exercise, as well as inner guidance. Participants are encouraged to dance or rest to their own liking, enjoying the scenic atmosphere of the garden and stream nearby.
Attendees will be given a pair of clean headphones with three separate channels with music from different genres. Guests will have the freedom to dance to whatever channel they want.
Law explains that the silent disco is an important way to bring communities together while also calming the mind into a zen or “flow” state without the help of any substances.
“The whole thing is sober and there’s a bunch of kids dancing. There’s all types of people from all walks of life and all cities. It’s just a beautiful thing,” Law said. If you are interested you can get a ticket here. Bring water, snacks, and your favorite item to dance with.
Silent disco had its origins in the 1970s to get around the noise restrictions. In the 2000s, it came back into popularity when some festivals started hosting silent events where many artists streamed music on different channels. Research shows that silent disco helps build social connection and reduce loneliness and stress.
Law plans to throw more silent discos in Sylva in the future. She is hoping to host a pop up silent disco at the farmers market and plans to collaborate with businesses to bring more therapeutic and community building dances to Sylva.
