Voting at WCU: What you need to know

Election Day on Nov. 5 is less than a month away and WCU wants to be sure students have every chance to cast their vote.

WCU has had a polling place since 2016 and many students take advantage to register and vote. All In, a nonpartisan organization that works with over 1000 colleges, reported WCU students had voting rate of 72% in 2020 – a 15% increase from 2016. Their goal is to have 92 % of students vote in the 2024 election.

The WCU polling place offers early voting Oct. 17 to Nov. 2 in the U.C. Multipurpose room. The polling place will be open from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. WCU students can use their student IDs to register and vote.  The polling place is not open on election day.

The Student Democracy Coalition will have shuttles to transport voters to the Jackson County Recreation Center on election day to vote. We will provide the information about the schedule as we near election day.

The deadline to request a mail-in ballot is Oct. 29. Out of state students should check out this guide on how and where to vote.

The mail-in ballot must be returned by Nov. 5 by 7:30 p.m. in the state and county where you are registered to vote. For those planning to vote absentee, make sure your voting registration is up to date. Remember to research voting rules for the elections, research deadlines for absentee ballots, and track your ballot to make sure it arrives on time. For additional information on how to fill out an absentee ballot, visit the NCSBE website for more details.
