Early voting saw record turnout. Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 5

Despite the Homecoming festivities, tailgating and home game WCU polling place saw a steady trickle of voters on the last day of early voting Nov. 2. By closing time at 3 p.m. over 2,900 people voted at WCU polling station the highest since the polling place opened in 2016.

In Jackson County 17,502 registered voters cast their ballot in-person or by mail or in total 56.3% of voter turnout. This is a little less then the state average of 57% and lower than some of the 25 counties affected by Hurricane Helene. In Haywood almost 62% of the registered voters voted early, in Macon 58% and Swain 50% of registered voters voted early.

The State Board of Election said that more than 4.2 million North Carolinians cast their ballots during the in-person early voting period which exceeded the previous early voting record of more than 3.6 million ballots cast in 2020.

As of Monday morning, including absentee voting, 4,453.339 voters have cast their ballot in the 2024 general election. That’s  56.66 % of the state’s 7.8 million registered voters.

The last chance for eligible, registered North Carolina voters to make their voice heard in this election is Tuesday, Nov. 5. Polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Voters in line at 7:30 p.m. will be able to cast their ballot.

The Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning and the Student Democracy Coalition will provide an SUV/van to offer rides from the back of the UC to the Cullowhee Recreation Center from 8 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. on election day. The schedule will be about every 15 minutes.
