Dillsboro wants to have its own Veterans parade and concert and potentially change the time of alcohol sale on Sundays to accommodate businesses.
During the regular town hall meeting on April 14, town leaders heard the proposal from the director of the Jackson County Veterans Services, Shelia Crumpler, who proposed a Veterans Day parade that would go through downtown Dillsboro. There would also be a veteran’s concert in Monteith Park. It would be on Tuesday, Nov. 11 around 10-11 a.m. and according to Crumpler, is anticipated to have about 300 people. It would start and end at Monteith Park. Crumpler plans to ask the county to cover the costs for the parade.
“I would never ask a dime from Dillsboro,” Crumpler said.
Crumpler plans to get county funds for the parade instead of Dillsboro town hall.
The proposal resonated with the town leaders.
“My husband is a veteran so I would love to see a parade,” said Gladys Pilarski, an alderperson.
The town is open to the idea but would like to see more logistics and numbers before deciding.
Alcohol on Sundays
The owner of Quirky Birds Treehouse and Bistro Mary Beth, proposed changing the hour of selling alcohol on Sundays to help businesses in Dillsboro with sales, specifically in regard to brunch on Sundays. As of now alcohol can be sold after noon on Sundays, but every other day in the week it is after 10 a.m.
At the next town hall meeting on May 12 at 6 p.m. there will be a hearing to vote on whanging the time.
The Jackson County historic preservation ordinance has been proposed to regulate owners of historic buildings and buildings in historic districts. The ordinance is 10 pages. Beth Farris has also been appointed to the historic preservation committee.
“I think that’s a great idea and I think that the committee did a great job putting it together,” said Alderperson Jim Cochran.
The restrooms are now open in Monteith Park.
