In the third game of the season for the Catamount women’s soccer team did not go in favor of the Cats. Despite great goalkeeping from Leanne Trudel, including a spectacular diving stop late in the second half, the Cats fell just short of the Georgia Southern Eagles for a final score of 1-0.
Samantha Whitaker got hurt just seconds into the match and left the match not to be seen again for the rest of the evening.
The sole goal of the night went in favor of the Eagles, coming off the cleat of Paisley Cathey and assisted by Erin Wilkins late in the first half of action.
The Catamounts were a little slow out of halftime but started ot pick up some steam in the last 20 minutes of the game. They had ample opportunities to get on the scoreboard, but it never turned out for the Cats.
WCU Head Coach Chad Miller was happy to see the ball being put into the box, but frustrated that it did not turn into any points.
“When you get the ball into those locations late in the game, you expect them to go into the net,” Miller said.
Looking ahead for the Catamounts have two tough opponents back-to-back against NC State and Tennessee. But Coach Miller wanted the schedule to be a little tougher.
“This year’s schedule, we are going to be tested in a big way out of conference, and that was intentional…an upcoming ACC team in NC State and then Tennessee, who will probably come in here as a top 3 team nationally.”
The Catamounts are 1-2 on the season and looking to turn it around quickly before their next two big opponents, NC State in Raleigh on August 27 and at home against top 5-ranked Tennessee on August 31 at 6 pm. The first 300 fans to enter the Catamount Athletic Complex on August 31 get a pair of free sunglasses.
