Student morale soared high as an indie pop band, Dayglow rocked WCU’s campus with a free concert.

The concert was from 7-9 p.m. with a DJ mix to start the event, followed by the entrance of the band an hour later.

The face of the band, singer/songwriter Sloan Struble, kept the audience energies high. Students sang, danced and watched the show.

The band, officially going by the name Dayglow since 2018, was founded by Struble. He released his first album “Fuzzybrain” that same year, and became a success with the popularity of one song, “Can I Call You Tonight?” Now, Dayglow has seven albums.

As for how a band or artist is decided, each show that WCU hosts is determined by a student survey created by Coleman Leopard, director of campus activities. The surveys are made with artists in the school’s price range. From there, a committee gives feedback on the surveys’ artists. When the surveys’ results are recorded, the school reaches out to some of the top vote getters to see if the artists would be available when needed.
For Dayglow, over a thousand students and faculty attended.

“Last night was fantastic. It was a very large and spirited crowd that was really engaged,” Brian Boyer, residential case manager said. “To me it seemed to probably be our second most attended concert since we’ve been doing them at the fountain.”

Attendees like Junior Avery Hubbard and her friend Ayla Watson, said that they only knew a few songs by the band, but that they were having a lot of fun.

Others like Isabella Erksine and Dulaney Boonsue, spent the majority of the show dancing in a circle with friends and smiles on their faces. The two expressed that while they were there for a few songs, they found the music they didn’t know to be really enjoyable too, saying that the band “rocks”, and the performance was “well done”.

Adding to the excitement of the first week of class, the concert was one of campus’ many first week events hosted to ring in the academic school year and welcome students back to Cullowhee.
