Nothing says “Fall” like homecoming in Cullowhee

It is that time of the year when we get to show out purple pride with marching band, parade, king and queen, football and lots of fun for students, WCU alums and the community.

WCU is hosting its homecoming week from Nov. 3 to 9 in Sylva and Cullowhee to celebrate the university and the community.

Homecoming is an annual weeklong series of events across WCU’s campus. Many events are planned for this homecoming. Check the schedule and make your own plans.

The first event planned for Homecoming Week is a Homecoming Kick-Off Brunch on Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. to noon.

One of the largest events is the Homecoming Carnival on Nov. 4 and 5 from 4 to 9 p.m. The carnival is brought to campus by the Department of Campus Activities, with multiple different rides for students to go on.

“For the carnival, we typically average around 2000 people or more per day,” said Coleman Leopard, the associate director for student programs and activities.

Student organizations are also able to use the carnival as a way to fundraise with carnival games.

There will also be a Homecoming Parade in Sylva on Nov. 7 in downtown Sylva starting at 5:30 p.m.
Floats for the parade are made by student organizations and local partners to showcase their Catamount pride.

“The homecoming parade is super exciting,” said Mallory Ansell, the Graduate Community Coordinator at Albright-Benton Residence Hall. “Every year you get to hand out candy to kids who are super grateful to see you.”

Ansell’s staff are planning their own float to be showcased at the Homecoming Parade.

“Last year I didn’t get to do a float, so I’m really excited to see what my team pulls together, and I’m really excited to be able to participate in it,” Ansell said.

Be also sure to go to the home football game against Mercer. WCU win will mean securing a playoff spot. There is new things also coming to the Homecoming celebration this year.

“We’re looking at trying to do a talent show, so that’ll be different and new for Homecoming week,” Leopard said. “We’re working with our Greek Life friends to work out the logistics when it comes to tryouts and things.”
