The Great Sapphire Outhouse Race returns for the 19th time to the slopes at Ski Sapphire Valley Resort on Saturday, Feb. 7, bringing decorated outhouses, live music and a day of fun (and fundraising) to Cashiers.

Starting at 3 p.m. the teams of three people participating will race homemade outhouses down the ski slopes. Each outhouse is attached to a set of skis and pushed by two members of the team while the third “sits” inside and rides down the slope. These outhouses can be made from wood, carboard, plastic or other homemade materials, inspiring creativity from participants.

The outhouses are often themed, one of race announcer RJ Grady’s favorite parts of the event.
“We’ve had the Flintstones come in all their caveman garb glory complete with Flint-mobile, Wizard of Oz in great costumes, including the wicked witch, Star Wars vehicles with storm troopers, and even a Fire Hydrant with folks dressed as puppies!” said Grady.
The Southeast Tourism Society has previously named the Great Sapphire Outhouse Race as a “Top 20” February event in the Southeast.
The races were started in 2007 as a fun event for local charities, with Grady as one of the founding members.
Admission to the event is $5 per person, with guided parking available for $5 per car. Participant check-in begins at noon, followed by the “Potty Parade” at 2:45 p.m. Internet access in the area is limited and organizers highly recommend bringing cash.
Proceeds from entrance fees, food sales and beverage net fees will be donated to the Rotary Club of Cashiers Valley to support local charities. Live music will be provided by ALR, performing classic rock and blues throughout the afternoon.
