SGA elections: For the students or for the title?

The Student Government Association’s candidates for President, Vice President and Senate have begun their campaigning for the 2026-27 school year. Candidates campaigning opened Feb. 9 at 12 a.m. and closes Feb. 18 at noon. Few WCU students and potential voters noticed that there are elections coming.

The campaigning went unnoticeable since the candidates were running unopposed. Students can cast votes between Feb. 16 and Feb. 18. To vote for the SGA board of the 2026-27 school year, visit Engage.wcu.edu .

Before you cast the vote for who will represent WCU student’s needs, check how SGA has been run in the past and present.

On the SGA instagram you will see an overview of the 2024-25 school year goals they met. This includes partnering with Clemson SGA and Clemson IFC for a relief drive for community member impacted by Hurricane Helene and holding over 600 appeals for issued tickets on campus in the Judicial Branch’s Traffic Court.

While these accomplishments do make a difference, one thing remains true for the SGA on WCU campus. They are not communicating with the students. We asked 5 students on campus, all with different majors, if they knew that seats on the SGA were now campaigning and open for voting. Not a single one had any idea that the SGA positions were even being considered for the 2026-27 school year.

Psychology major Audrey Barth, was deeply upset when she was told that she could no longer apply to SGA’s positions for her junior year at Western.

“I was so excited for the chance to serve my fellow students and make real positive change,” Audrey said. “I had no idea that they even voted for the next school year during the spring semester.”

SGA is an amazing opportunity for students to support one another and take on a bigger role with the University. These roles should be about helping your fellow student more than how impressive the title looks on your portfolio.

With over $600 in tuition going towards student activities, which includes SGA, students voices should be heard by an organization that is built to support them.
