DRUM TAO draws standing ovation at WCU Bardo Arts Center

Thundering sounds of drums entertained and thrilled the audience who came to the DRUM TAO returned performance at WCU despite empty containers for the ear plugs. The bats hiding in the Bardo ceiling were less happy, but Bardo staff said they are doing everything to catch them and get them out.

DRUM TAO made their anticipated return to Bardo Arts Center at Western Carolina University as a part of their 2026 North American tour. Their show is entitled “The Best,” and according to audience members it was exactly that. Every piece was followed by cheers from a packed crowd on Feb. 19.

The show featured a variety of Wadaiko drums accompanied by Japanese flutes and harps. Their performance was dynamic as they embraced their Japanese culture through dance, attire and background visuals.

DRUM TAO is known for their high-energy performances and technical precision. Some audience members were left speechless by this electric performance, and others had too many favorite parts to choose from.

“I would say my favorite part was the choreography that they did with the drums. I really liked when they did the crossover of the arms with the drums and then ran in a circle,” said WCU senior Chloe Price.

The ensemble incorporated traditional Japanese choreography with Wagasa (Japanese umbrella), branded flags, and synchronized movements. The program included a variety of upbeat and emotional pieces that highlighted the talents of individual members.

“It was all really cool. I have no idea if I could pick a favorite part, but they’re like superhuman. I can’t imagine the strength and stamina it takes to do all of that,” said WCU junior K.B. Bradley.

The audience was packed with WCU students, faculty and community members.

“I didn’t know who they were and didn’t have any expectations, but K.B said it looked cool and invited me, and I was like sure,” said Price. “I didn’t think it was going to be all that though, but it was really amazing.”

By the end of DRUM TAO’s two-hour performance, everyone in the crowd was on their feet in a standing ovation. “The Best” North American tour continues through April 3, with their final stop scheduled in Oregon.
