WCU Field Day: From tug-of-war to victory roars

Students gathered under clear spring skies on April 17 for a lively field day outside the Rock residence halls at Western Carolina University, where games, music and friendly competition brought the campus community together in celebration of the semesters final stretch.

As the school year comes to an end, getting outside and active is a great way for students to shed some stress and relax.

“I came out to Field Day looking for a break from all my classes, this definitely gave me the break that I needed,” said WCU freshman Ethan Medeiros.

The Field Day had activities like water balloons, limbo, tug-of-war and Spikeball for students to get involved in.

“My favorite game was the limbo. It was a great competition, but I did win in the end,” said Catherine Haley, a freshman living in the Rock residence halls.

Students were offered free T-shirts with the words “How Y’all Doing” on the front. This shirt pushed the theme of the event, which is to help student mental and physical health.

WCU’s Health and Wellness unit also provided free water, Gatorade and popsicles to cool down in the hot sun with.

As a freshman, Medeiros said he loved seeing the Western student community coming out and being able to meet new people on campus.

“I think every single Catamount should come to this event every year,” Medeiros said.
