For the first time since 2020, Southwestern Community College students will be hosting a forum for candidates seeking public office.
Incumbents and challengers for the Jackson County Board of Commissioners have been invited to participate in a forum at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, in the Burrell Conference Center on SCC’s Jackson Campus.
Students in Instructor Timothy Moser’s Sociology class have been studying local issues and will be asking questions of the candidates.
As of Sept. 15, both candidates for Chair of the Board of Commissioners – Marcia Almond (D) and David Rogers (R) – have confirmed their intentions to participate. Also planning to attend are Casey Walawender (D) and Sean Bridgers (D). Steve Sutton (R) and John Smith (R) have also been invited.
The forum’s format will avoid direct dialogue between the candidates. Instead, each candidate will have an opportunity to address questions posed by students.
“This is a wonderful learning opportunity for our students, and it’s an ideal setting for undecided voters to hear directly from the candidates,” Moser said.
