The Sylva Pride parade is back and as one of the organizers says the “queer joy is felt around this time of year”.
The parade will be at the end of the two-day festivities on Sept. 20 starting at 1:30 p.m. Downtown from Schulman to Spring Street and back to Bridge Park will be closed for the parade.
Two years ago, Sylva town commissioners voted against holding the parade because of cost and safety concerns but provided space and more days for other activities in downtown. With the two new commissioners this year the parade is back, splitting the costs for town staff overtime with the town. Sylva Pride has already raised their $1,140 out of the total $2,280 total expenses for the parade.
“Just speaking as an organizer, the outpouring of support and enthusiasm we’ve seen for the revived Sylva Pride Parade march is really really exciting and I’m thrilled to be a part of that,” event organizer, Paige LeBlanc said.
Sylva Pride will begin its festivities on Sept. 18 with Pride Mass at St. John’s Episcopal Church at 6:30 p.m., followed by a drag show at 9 p.m.
Fan favorites like the Rainbow Jam Art Market, Chalk Walk, and a Read-In at the Jackson County Library will happen midday on Sept. 19.
Organizers suggest staying hydrated, bringing a hat and sunscreen while at the event.
Sylva Pride is working on transportation for Western Carolina University students who want to attend the festivities.
