With elections approaching Webster and Jackson County Board of Elections are organizing a civic forum as a space for the community to meet with candidates running for different offices, discuss issues and problems and how they will address them. People can register to vote, ask questions while having fun.
The event is on Sunday, Sept. 27 in the Webster Park from 4 to 6 p.m.
The Town of Webster and the Jackson County Board of Elections do not endorse participating candidates, organizations, or viewpoints. There will be no scheduled speeches, official debates, or question-and-answer sessions.
“The Civic Forum in Webster is going to be a big thing,” Jackson County Board of Elections director Amanda Allen said for The Sylva Herald. She added that Webster is the only precinct in the county where people walk to vote. “They wanted to do something where people would have access to information in a neighborly way so they could talk to the candidates,” Allen added.
The event is close to the anniversary from Hurricane Helene devastation of the region and Webster Mayor Leigh Ann Young said that it is a good reminder how the community can come together. She is very happy that candidates from both parties agreed to participate.
To keep the event truly civil organizers request that attendees:
- Treat every person with courtesy, dignity, and respect.
- Welcome differing opinions and engage in thoughtful, respectful conversation.
- Listen with an open mind, even when perspectives differ.
- Focus conversations on ideas, policies, and community issues rather than personal attacks.
- Keep discussions centered, whenever possible, on local issues and matters relevant to Jackson County.
- Refrain from harassment, intimidation, or disruptive behavior.
- Help maintain a family-friendly atmosphere.
- Respect event volunteers, election officials, candidates, exhibitors, and fellow attendees.
- Follow the direction of Event Hosts and volunteers regarding safety and event operations.
Webster Park is behind the softball field near the old Webster School at 1528 Webster Road.
