Battle of the Bands returns to the Western Carolina University central plaza on Oct. 2 from 6 to 10 p.m.
After its initial performance last year WCU bands will entertain WCU students and community, showcase their musical talents and fundraise for the Community Table.
“This is supposed to be a fun event that is building the community up, especially since we didn’t get to have our week of welcome concert,” said Student Event Coalition president, Mackenzie Beaudroux.
Bands are welcome to apply before the deadline on Sept. 14. Currently six bands are expected to perform including Moody Bridge, 3-Thwart, Boiled Brass, Evan Miller, Cameron Brown, and Lord Fourquad. The music genres range from indie rock to a barbershop quartet. Performers with social media accounts have been linked above.
Prizes for this year are still undecided. Last year’s Judges Choice winner, AMFM, and Peoples Choice winner, Plant, were awarded $150. Last year the event had Brian Boyer, Chancellor Brown, Grady Jones and Paws as judges who oversaw the event. This year winners are decided solely by audience vote. Scanning a QR code allows audiences to vote for their favorite bands throughout the performances.
Audiences are encouraged to show up for their fellow student performers, but also show up for their community. Battle of the Bands is not only a performance but a food drive partnering with the Emergency Management Student Association and local Sylva food bank Community Table. Last year the event collected and donated 747 pounds of food.
